The New World

The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest men of past centuries.- Descartes

I received the book that I ordered last week to study in preparation for my interview. I know some of the U.S. History and government lessons because I was able to learn them while working as a teacher. I would say 80% of it on 100 questions for my interview that I already know. But I want to have a book that will guide me, that's why I bought one. I feel guilty that I know many things (no, not many)but a lot of things than my own country's history. Well, I wasn't really interested in history when I was in high school until just now. I will probably review Philippine history when I get my dual citizenship.

Now, some of you know the US History and Government (So, you may skip this blog if you already know :). But I tell you this, I used to hate history. But now I absolutely love it. I am now learning about history through reading and watching history videos. I was inspired to learn and read more. This blog was created for me and others who are studying the US History in preparation for their Citizenship Test and Interview. I also like to document the history lessons that I learned and will learn in the future through blogging.

The word history comes from the Greek word historía which means "to learn or know by inquiry."

 Now, let's learn U.S. History!!!!

Discovering a New World. In, September 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain for the Indies (Asia) To get to Asia they had to travel east over land. Columbus thought that sailing across the Atlantic Ocean would take less time. On, October 12, 1492, They reached an island, and Columbus thought he had landed in the Indies (Asia), so he called the native people living here Indians. But they had actually landed in America. And they called it “the New World”.

Christopher Columbus landed in North America
on October 12, 1492. Americas celebrate
that day with a holiday called Columbus Day.

The English Colonies

A group of people called the Pilgrims sailed to America in 1620. They came to America because they were not free to practice their religion in England.

The Pilgrims began to live and worship as they wished in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Watch this!

The Pilgrims invited Native Americans to a thanksgiving feast in 1621. Americans remember that first thanksgiving with the holiday Thanksgiving in November.

That's all for today. More US History lessons to come! Let's study together....

Have a great weekend!

Science For Kids: Frogs

The Pre-K class had a short discussion last week about the question: Do frogs hibernate? As I was searching for some videos to supplement my lesson, I found this video that was created beautifully that will help me explain the lesson we had last week. This is the video that I need to show my students in class tomorrow.

And yes, they do hibernate. Frogs bury themselves under ground or under leaf litter, and hibernate. In some areas, these frogs freeze completely when winter comes, entering a hibernation period. They actually stop their heartbeat, and thaw when spring comes. Watch this!

I found this article that talks about the Noth American wood frog.

Hibernation is most interesting in a species known as the wood frog. This species is found in northern climates, including Canada and Alaska. These frogs simply burrow underneath leaf litter on the forest floor and freeze solid. The physiology of the wood frog has evolved to produce an anti-freeze of sorts. Water is pulled out of the cells and replaced with this anti-freeze. So, when the frog tissue freezes, ice crystals do not damage sensitive organs. When springtime comes the wood frogs warm up, thaw out and go about the business of laying eggs and eating insects. Resource Link Click here

Nice article. I like frogs, but had no idea of this. :) I know that my class will enjoy learning about this lesson.

                                       Pre-K's Top 4 favorite Frogs

Tree Frog- because they are amazing,(during winter time) they freezes and thaws in the spring.

Coqui- they are small, they climb up  trees and sing.

American Bull Frog: Kids enjoy learning about the largest frog (Bullfrog) that eats anything.

                                            Check this out!

Red eyed frog is also popular and their favorite because they climb up trees and clinging onto leaves. When they are ready to breed they jump off and float through the air. Children thinks this frog has a super power like superman because as soon as he reach the ground nothing happens. This little guy didn't get hurt because they weigh less. And then I have to demonstrate this as a teacher (you want your students to understand what happen). Well, I did all the gestures, drama and play like a frog(floating through the air, stretched the arms and legs like frogs). They even enjoyed the frog dance (stretching and wiggling their toes) And they love it! Haha!

We will be learning more....we are extremely excited about learning new everyday!

Talk To Jesus

Sunday morning is church time. We get up, get some breakfast and some coffee, feed the dogs and let them out to do their thing. Go to church. Then go home and read some books. It is a quiet, peaceful, and (raining outside)relaxing time. And it's going to be blogging time about Sunday message. What was the message at the church today?

Even in this most ordinary of times, we have a tremendous opportunity to come to know Jesus on a deeper level.”

We're probably back into the routines of our ordinary lives after the holidays-back to school, back to work, back to having Christmas decorations packed away. But even in this times, we have a tremendous opportunity to come to know Jesus on a deeper level. Let's come to know Jesus through our prayer, conversation, and reflection.

Ways to Talk with Jesus: We can and must be completely truthful with Him, even opening to Him our negative feelings: anger, frustration, confusion, and despair. It's like talking to a 'best friend' and sharing your deepest secrets with them.

TALK TO JESUS
by Patricia Moore

You can talk to Jesus when you're glad.
You can talk to Jesus when you're sad.
You can talk to Him every day.
He will listen to what you say.
He cares about everything you do.
He is waiting to hear from you.
Why don't you pray to Jesus today?
He will always listen to what you say!

I talk to God no matter how things are going. I even ask him sometimes how his day has been and tell Him “Have a great day!”I thank him for the things I see, hear and learn. Thanking Him everyday for the protection while driving on the road and always counting all the blessings He showered upon us. Thank you Lord!

      Have a Blessed Sunday!

A Must Watch for Fans of History

John Adams
"Children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom." John Adams

A miniseries on the life of John Adams and the first 50 years of the United States. The HBO series is by far the best Colonial film or series. I watched the series on DVD of John Adams and I was stunned and awed by the portrayal of John Adams by Paul Giamatti. Actor Paul Giamatti brought Mr. Adams to life!
I'm not (nor have I ever been) a big fan of history or social studies before watching this. It was a joy to watch. John Adams tells the remarkable true story of the second man to be the President of the United States and how the founding fathers began the country the world knows today. I have not finished the series and am currently only up through Part IV but I am most impressed and I cannot wait to watch the next episodes.
Paul Giamatti (John Adams) and Laura Linney (Abigail Adams) both showed the "human" side of John and Abigail characters and their true love, respect, and admiration they had for each other throughout their lives.

I applaud the producers, the cast and the director. This mini-series needs to be REQUIRED viewing for all American school children. I will use this when I teach US History to all of my future elementary students and to my own children. I hope more movies or mini-series about early America can be made with the quality as this one. I'm giving this a 10. I absolutely loved it!

Read, learn and enjoy!

Green Rose

Green Rose is an upcoming Filipino remake of the Korean drama of the same title. I have not watched this TV show that was aired on SBS and ABS CBN before. So, there's no way that I can compare it, which is OK. Even watching "Imortal" which is kinda like Twighlight, still Filipino directors know how to twist and make their own stories differently. And so, I am expecting changes in the plot of this PH version of Green Rose.

Anne Curtis and actors Jake Cuenca and Jericho Rosales have made so many great movies and have had many extremely amazing performances in their own soap(TV series) before. So, Green Rose will be this year's much awaited soap. I am so excited!

Jericho, who is known as "Echo" is a very talented actor and a great performer. His role in the story: Echo works for a large corporation he falls in love with Anne Curits, who portrays the daughter of the company’s chairman. Being framed for a murder case, Jericho escapes to another country where he meets a powerful tycoon and becomes his right-hand man. Jericho will return to the country to take revenge on those who have once set him up. (that's all I know). So, guys...let's watch this youtube teaser to get to know a little bit of "Jerome" / Jericho Rosales.

The Year Is 2011

It's New Years Day, and I hope your holiday season was safe, happy and filled with great friends and family.

I wish all of my readers to live a healthy, happy, and successful life in 2011!

I am going to try to improve myself in 2011.

My New Year’s resolution is to stay fit, workout harder and try to eat healthier. I would also like to make more time for my family and friends! After all, they are what’s important in life!  Things that I want to achieve or get done within the New Year.
So, here's my plan:
1. Get Fit
BECOME HEALTHIER!!! I am hoping to lose at least 10 pounds this year, which should be easier because all I have to do is actually move and eat less. My personal goal is 120 lbs.
2. Get organized
Pantry. I buy too much food that I don't even eat or use for cooking. So, I gotta stop buying unnecessary stuff. And the pantry was not organized. I already reduced some clutter and mess. Get rid of old and expired items.

Refrigerator. No more sodas (it's been awhile we have not put or drink sodas). No more frozen lunchables. It will be all fresh meat, vegetables and fruit. Get rid of old and expired items.

Office Room. Well, our office room is cleaned and organized. We just need to maintain to keep it that way.

Try these office organizers from Amazon.

Dresser and Closet. We would love to have neat, organized drawers/closets, if only we knew where to begin. I got this video from youtube. Hope this will help us.

Try these closet/dresser organizers

Make up. If you don’t already have an organizer for your makeup, now is the time to pick one up. I just bought mine and I love it! Get rid of old and expired items.

Nice Cosmetic organizers available on Amazon..I love it!

I super like these jewelry organizers from Amazon...

3. Spend Time Wisely

-I spent WAY too much time in front of my laptop and it is unhealthy. The same way as spending time to be a couch potato. This means spending time being lazy sitting in front of the television doing nothing but watching and eating. I will cut down on my television watching/facebooking(I love Fbing) and I should be reading books.

This one is hard because I use my laptop for lesson planning, Fbooking, blogging etc. Hahaha So, I gotta try to really pay attention to the time (when to stop).

-Spending more time with family is important. We will take a trip for our 4th anniversary this summer. Somewhere far, that we could relax and think about ourselves only and enjoy!

4. SELF IMPROVEMENT
-Continue my Math and Civics Classes.
-I will try hard to improve my English writing and speaking skills throughout 2011.

All of these plans are easy to make but extremely difficult to maintain.
But if these goals were achieve I will definitely reward myself for achiving it.

Let's make our 2011 our best year. Goodluck on your goals!

"We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. "

                                                     What are your 2011 goals?

Read, learn end enjoy!
